Steve Mcqueen
by Barney Battles
Perhaps no one embodied the easy cool of the Sixties and early Seventies as much as Steve McQueen did. On screen he appeared to be a simmering mass of contradictions, combining blue-eyed detachment with an inner turmoil that made women want to be with him and men want to be him. However, beneath his steely exterior, McQueen was a man beset by personal demons. By looking at his star signs from both the East and the West, we are able to build up a more accurate profile of the man behind the myth.

Steve McQueen was born on March 24th 1930, making him an Aries born in the Chinese Year of the Horse. Both of these signs share similar traits. They are sexy, inquisitive and practical creatures and both are sometimes at the mercy of their own fiery tempers. In fact, their similarities are such that they combine to give a defined picture of the movie star.

Detached from their emotions

Interestingly, both the Horse and the Ram are unmoved by emotional displays and can often appear detached from their own emotions. It was this detachment that became McQueen’s trademark in films. He was cited as the best screen actor of his generation by his peers, many of whom were in awe if his ability to appear to be doing nothing in front of the camera and yet communicate so much. Horse and Ram people are often accused of emotional detachment or even a two-faced nature, appearing to have the ability to turn their emotions off or on at the flick of a switch. With two such strong signs governing his creativity, McQueen was certainly able to tap into that gift – but sometimes at a cost to his personal relationships.

To those who didn’t know McQueen, he could appear introvert and even aloof. However his equine sign is particularly known for its lack of self-esteem, resulting in a social awkwardness or the desire to avoid crowds. While McQueen appeared to court attention, he often spoke of his desire to leave it all behind: “I would rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth.”

Vulnerable in relationships

In relationships, McQueen’s vulnerability was revealed only to those who had proved themselves worthy of his trust. For many, this was too much to bear. Both the Horse and the Ram are immensely attractive creatures once you get to know them, despite their insecurities. Ali McGraw, his second wife, said: “I think it’s safe to say that it would have been impossible not to fall in love with Steve.” Perhaps the main appeal for women was McQueen’s perpetual desire to assert his independence. Again, this is a very equine trait. Horses need to be free as much as they need air to breathe. This could be a key reason why McQueen chose to embrace the world of motor racing. For him, it was a pastime in which he had no one else to rely on, just his own actions and the car at his control.

It would seem that a world-famous movie star, adored by millions, might have little to feel insecure about. However, for McQueen, it was his talent as an actor that threatened his confidence. He was an instinctive actor, rather than an intelligent actor and he often felt unworthy of the accolades bestowed upon him. This feeling that you are somehow ‘pulling the wool’ over people’s eyes is one shared by both the Ram and the Horse. Neither are confident in the talents they have and often this can give rise to shows of temper in an effort to disguise their feelings of inadequacy. McQueen once stated that “I am not an actor, I am a reactor,” underlining his lack of belief in his own gifts. Peter Yates, who worked with him on the film, Bullitt, said that McQueen “didn’t want to be lumbered with speaking plot. He wasn’t sure he could do it.”

Destiny plots a lonely path

The Chinese have a belief that those born under the sign of the Horse are destined to leave home early. This is certainly true of McQueen, although the choice was taken away from him. His mother, having been abandoned by her husband, left McQueen with her parents until he was eight years old. On a psychic level, this will have affected him profoundly, combining with his astrological insecurities to create a man who would not form friendships easily. However, once friendships have been forged with either a Horse or a Ram, they are likely to be lifelong and intense.

Unfortunately, the demons of doubt that plagued McQueen throughout his career as an actor will have charted the course to self-destruction that he ultimately followed. Both the Horse and the Ram are escapists and fantasists and if they are unable to achieve their dreams on earth, will seek artificial means to relieve their psychic pain. McQueen became heavily involved in alcohol and drugs, which undoubtedly contributed to his untimely death.
