Cream of the Crop...
If you happen to be in the countryside in the UK this summer, keep your eyes on the fields and with luck you might just see a crop circle. These are large and often complex patterns created by the flattening of a crop such as wheat, barley or maize.

In 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley claimed that they had started the phenomenon by making circles on crops with the use of simple tools.

Yet the fact is, crop circles were first discovered in the 1930`s and over time these strange patterns have become more and more intricate, until today, when some portray fractals, symbols and even aliens.

Various interested parties have offered explanations for these features. For the cynics the view is that these are manmade, either as hoaxes to make money out of or as land art. However, the complexity and symmetry of some defy rational explanation, and these are known as `genuine`. Indeed, scientists who have studied the `genuine` circles have suggested that intense electromagnetic radiation causes the phenomena, although this has been hotly disputed.

The ideal time to go crop circle spotting is between April and September and one of the best locations is in Wiltshire, in South West England. As well as being a beautiful and historic county, Wiltshire is also Crop Circle Central.

Indeed only recently, on the 25th of May, yet another huge crop circle was found in a field of barley. The latest circle measures about 350ft (100 metres), and has a Yin Yang theme.

It appeared under an early ancient structure called Windmill Hill which is near to the better known Silbury Hill. If you are interested in this specific part of the world, you will also know that Silbury Hill is within walking distance of Neolithic Avebury.

Now, most people have heard of Stonehenge, also in Wiltshire and about 20 miles to the south. But did you know that Avebury`s avenue and stone circle actually predates Stonehenge- which is Megalithic- and is approximately 5,000 year`s old- though both of these sites share UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

If you go looking for a crop circle, you may also notice the very unusual energy that the Marlborough Downs, the area of Wiltshire where most of this action goes on, has. It is a very healing and peaceful area, with a sense that there is definitely something bigger than us. Is there a link between all this activity even though they are centuries apart? Well, I`d say there was!
