Avatar and the Indigo Children...
`Indigo Children` - it sounds like something that happens when the little ones` decide to chew a Biro doesn`t it? In fact it is a label given to children whose parents believe they possess special or supernatural abilities.

The idea is based on a theory by Nancy Ann Tappe. Tappe published the book Understanding Your Life Through Colour in 1982, which described how she developed the notion.

Tappe claimed that during the 1960s, she began to realize that many children were being born with "indigo" auras. The idea was later spread by a book by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober called The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived (1998). The book gave greater publicity to the notion and it became the main source of information regarding "Indigo Children".

Carroll and Tober believe indigo children are born to change the world and end conflict, waste and processed food. Indigo children are claimed to be empathetic, curious, strong-willed and independent. They are also often perceived by friends and others as being a little strange. They are also said to possess an interest spiritual matters from early childhood. Other traits include a high IQ and psychic skills combined with a resistance to authority.

In contrast, psychologist Russell Barkley says no objective evidence has been produced for the existence of indigo children and the traits usually attributed to them are so vague they could describe almost anyone. An interesting incident in relation to indigo children occurred in the U.S. media when a Dallas Observer reporter recorded the following conversation between a man who worked with these children, and an `indigo child`...

"Are you an indigo?" he asked Dusk. The boy looked at him shyly and nodded. "I`m an avatar" Dusk said. "I can recognize the four elements of earth, wind, water and fire. The next avatar won`t come for 100 years." The man seemed impressed!

Readers of the Dallas Observer later contacted the newspaper to inform its staff that the child`s response appeared to be taken from the storyline of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a cartoon which was then showing on Nickelodeon. The editor of the paper, perhaps feeling a little embarrassed, admitted they were not aware of the possible connection until their readers brought it to their attention.

Are indigo children the result of children and adults allowing their imaginations to run wild, or could there really be some vital changes occurring in the world`s youngsters - what do you think?
